First Glance at Skype for the iPhone

I’ve been waiting for the Skype for iPhone and it was worth waiting for. Skype for iPhone’s popular voice-over-IP app when making Skype-to-Skype calls is excellent. It is also easy to use and looks great.

Skype for iPhone features include free Skype-to-Skype calls, see when your Skype contacts are online and available, use SkypeOut feature to call cell phones and landlines, receive incoming calls thru a SkypeIn number, accept an incoming conference call, and send instant messages to your Skype contacts. All of these features of Skype for iPhone are similar with other mobile versions that work on Android, Java-based phones, and Windows Mobile.

How To Get Started

The first thing I did was downloaded Skype from the App Store and using my user name and password, I signed in. The app automatically imported all of my account information including my contacts and my available balance in my SkypeOut. The interface has an iPhone feel and is likely the same with Windows Mobile version. For example, the dialpad looks the same with that of an iPhone and the same goes with Skype’s contact list that has an iPhone-like filtering tab.

In order to make a voice call, Skype for iPhone requires Wi-Fi. If 9to5Mac can make voice calls over AT&T's 3G network on an iPhone using the 3.0 software, Skype for iPhone can’t connect using the same thing on a 3G iPhone using the current 2.2 software when I tried using it.

Great Voice Quality

Wi-Fi generated voice calls sound good. Skype-to-Skype calls are better compared to an average cell phone call and it’s louder and clearer. SkypeOut calls to cell phones and landlines aren’t that sharp but its quality is very good similar to that of a very good cellular call. When I tried calling, there was a distracting echo but didn’t last for more than a minute. The rates of SkypeOut as of this moment start at 2.1 cents per minute, which is the same on the iPhone. After comparing all of my calls using my Skype for iPhone vs. other mobile VoIP services, I can definitely say that Skype for iPhone has a better voice quality.

A Few Flaws

Just like any other iPhones, Skype for iPhone has a few flaws. One of my contacts was actually connected but appeared offline. I knew about it after receiving a call from my contact and appeared online after the call. I also experienced a delay when ending a call and a slow response when tapping an app through the touch screen. I can’t chat via third-party IM like those of AIM and Yahoo Messenger.

Skype for iPhone doesn’t have all of the features that you need and has a few flaws but what matters most is its very good voice quality which is the most important thing on an iPhone. And for this, I highly recommend Skype for iPhone.
